Sermorelin is a previously FDA-approved peptide that was available by the manufacturer until it voluntarily discontinued production in 2008. Sermorelin is a synthetic 29-amino-acid analog of growth hormone-releasing hormone, or GHRH. It works by binding GHRH receptors in the pituitary and stimulating the body's own pulsatile growth hormone release rather than supplying exogenous growth hormone directly. In older literature, sermorelin was used to treat pediatric growth hormone deficiency, and published reviews describe it as the shortest synthetic GHRH fragment with full biological activity.
Potential benefits may include:
Sermorelin was originally approved by the FDA as Geref® for the treatment of growth hormone deficiency in children and for diagnostic evaluation of growth hormone secretion. Geref® is no longer marketed, and Sermorelin is currently available through compounding pharmacies pursuant to a prescription. Sermorelin has been studied for its effects on growth hormone secretion and related physiological processes. Research into its potential applications remains ongoing, and not all proposed uses have been established. Individual responses may vary based on factors including age, baseline hormone levels, overall health, and treatment adherence.
